What Are Lash Extensions
What Are Eyelash Extensions?
An eyelash extension treatment is the practice of applying semi-permanent synthetic fibres onto the natural lashes to make them appear longer, thicker, and darker. The goal of lash extensions is to give the eyes a made-up appearance without the use of strip lashes or mascara, creating a beautiful, effortless look that lasts for weeks.
What makes lash extensions so popular is their incredible versatility. There are multiple variations of lash sets, styles, lengths, curls, and diameters available, making every set completely customizable to suit each client’s unique features, preferences, and lifestyle. This level of personalization is exactly why lash extensions have become one of the most sought-after beauty treatments worldwide.
The Application Technique
All lash extension sets, regardless of type, are applied using the fundamental technique of isolation. This involves working with two tweezers simultaneously – one tweezer is used to isolate and hold open a single natural lash, separating it from all surrounding lashes, while the other tweezer picks up and applies the extension.
For classic sets, you apply a single lash extension to each isolated natural lash. For volume sets, you apply a fan – which is a collection of multiple ultra-thin lash extensions handmade and bonded together at the base – to each isolated natural lash. This isolation technique is critical for ensuring each natural lash can grow and shed independently without damage.
The Four Types of Lash Extension Sets
As a professional lash artist, you need to understand the different types of lash extension sets available. Each set type creates a distinct look, uses different application techniques, and suits different client needs and preferences.
There are four main types of lash extension sets that every lash artist must master:
- Classic
- Hybrid
- Volume
- Mega Volume
Additionally, there’s a popular style variation that can be applied to any of these sets:
- Wispy
Understanding these different set types allows you to customize looks for each client, meet diverse beauty preferences, and expand your service offerings. Let’s break down each type so you know exactly what they are, how they’re created, and when to use them.
1. CLASSIC LASH EXTENSIONS
What It Is:
Classic lashes are the foundation of lash extension artistry. This technique involves applying one single extension to one natural lash – a 1:1 ratio.
Characteristics:
- Application: One extension per natural lash
- Ratio: 1:1
- Appearance: Natural to moderately enhanced
- Diameter: Typically 0.10mm – 0.18mm (most commonly 0.15mm)
- Fullness: Depends on how many natural lashes the client has
- Look: Clean, defined, elegant
2. HYBRID LASH EXTENSIONS
What It Is:
Hybrid lashes are a combination of classic and volume techniques in one set. Typically, the set consists of approximately 50-70% classic lashes and 30-50% volume fans.
Characteristics:
- Application: Mix of single extensions (classic) and handmade fans (volume)
- Ratio: 1:1 for classic classic to and 1: 3-10 depending on the number of lash extensions in your fans.
- Appearance: Textured, dimensional, fuller than classic but softer than volume
- Diameter: Classic lashes: 0.12mm-0.15mm; Volume fans: 0.05mm-0.07mm
- Fullness: Medium to full
- Look: Textured, spiky, dimensional with variation
3. VOLUME LASH EXTENSIONS
What It Is:
Volume lashes involve creating handmade fans of multiple ultra-thin extensions and applying each fan to one natural lash. The most common is 2D-5D (2-5 extensions per fan).
Characteristics:
- Application: Handmade fans of 2-5 thin extensions per natural lash
- Ratio: Multiple extensions to one natural lash (2D, 3D, 4D, 5D, 8D or even higher depending on fullness you want to achieve)
- Appearance: Full, fluffy, dramatic
- Diameter: 0.03mm – 0.07mm (very thin, lightweight extensions)
- Fullness: Full and dense
- Look: Soft, fluffy, glamorous
4. MEGA VOLUME LASH EXTENSIONS
What It Is:
Mega volume is the most advanced volume technique, using extremely thin extensions in large fans – typically 6D-16D+ (6-16+ extensions per fan). This creates maximum fullness and drama.
Characteristics:
- Application: Large handmade fans of 6-16+ ultra-thin extensions per natural lash
- Ratio: 6D, 8D, 10D, 12D, 16D+ (many extensions to one natural lash)
- Appearance: Extremely full, dense, dramatic, almost “false lash” effect
- Diameter: 0.03mm – 0.05mm (the thinnest available)
- Fullness: Maximum density and fullness
- Look: Bold, glamorous, show-stopping
5. WISPY LASH EXTENSIONS (STYLE VARIATION)
What It Is:
Wispy lashes are not a separate technique but a styling method that can be applied to classic, hybrid, or volume sets. It creates a textured, feathery look with intentional variation in lengths.
Characteristics:
- Application: Strategic placement of longer “spike” lashes among shorter base lashes
- Can be created with: Classic, hybrid, or volume techniques
- Appearance: Textured, feathery, spiky, dimensional
- Pattern: Alternating or clustered long and short lengths
- Fullness: Varies depending on base technique (classic, hybrid, or volume)
- Look: Kim Kardashian-style, editorial, trendy, textured
