CONSULTATION TECHNIQUES

Consultation Time: 10-15 minutes

Purpose: Gather essential client information, assess suitability for lash extensions, and determine appropriate styling.

THE COMPREHENSIVE CONSULTATION CARD

A single, well-designed consultation card can cover all necessary information and be updated at each visit. Your consultation card should include the following sections:

1. Client Information & Medical History

  • Full name, contact details, and emergency contact
  • Medical history: allergies, eye conditions, medications, skin sensitivities
  • Lifestyle factors: daily activities, makeup habits, sleep position
  • Previous lash extension experience (if any)

2. Contraindications Assessment

  • Eye infections or conditions (conjunctivitis, blepharitis, styes)
  • Recent eye surgery or procedures
  • Trichotillomania or compulsive lash pulling
  • Alopecia or lash loss conditions
  • Extremely weak or damaged natural lashes
  • Severe allergies or sensitivities
  • Any condition that would make treatment unsafe

3. Patch Test Documentation (If Performed)

  • Date of patch test (24-48 hours before appointment)
  • Products used during patch test
  • Application area
  • Any reactions observed
  • Client confirmation of no adverse reactions

4. Style Preferences & Mapping

  • Desired look: natural, dramatic, glamorous, etc.
  • Preferred length, curl type, and volume level
  • Set type: Classic, Hybrid, Volume, or Mega Volume
  • Style variation: Wispy or uniform
  • Visual references or inspiration photos
  • Eye shape considerations and mapping plan

5. Consent & Agreement

The client must read, understand, and sign consent acknowledging:

  • Understanding of the lash extension procedure
  • Knowledge of products being used on their eyes
  • Awareness of potential risks (irritation, allergic reaction, natural lash damage if improperly maintained)
  • Commitment to proper aftercare practices
  • Understanding of fill requirements and maintenance schedule
  • Agreement to disclose any health changes at future appointments

6. Aftercare Instructions Acknowledgment

Client confirms they have received and understood instructions for:

  • Daily cleansing routine
  • Products to avoid (oil-based products, waterproof mascara)
  • Activities to avoid in first 24-48 hours such as swimming, facials, steaming
  • When to book refill appointments (typically 2-4 weeks)
  • When to contact you with concerns

7. Return Visit Updates

Each subsequent appointment should include a brief update section noting:

  • Date of appointment and service type (full set or refill)
  • Any changes in health, medications, or lifestyle
  • Satisfaction with previous set and retention
  • Any concerns or issues experienced
  • Style adjustments or changes requested
  • Products used and mapping applied

CONSULTATION BEST PRACTICES

  • First-time clients: Complete the full consultation card thoroughly
  • Returning clients: Update relevant sections and note any changes
  • Keep detailed records: Protects you legally and helps track client preferences
