LASH EXTENSION TOOLS AND MATERIALS

Introduction

As a professional lash artist, having the right tools and materials is essential for creating beautiful, safe, and long-lasting lash extension sets. Quality tools not only make your work easier and more efficient, but they also ensure the safety and comfort of your clients.

In this section, we’ll cover all the essential tools and materials you need to begin your lash career, what each item is used for, and what to look for when making your purchases.

1. TWEEZERS

Tweezers are the most important tools in lash applications. You’ll work with at least two pairs during every treatment.

Isolation Tweezers (Non-Dominant Hand):

  • Purpose: To separate and hold individual natural lashes during application
  • Characteristics: Straight or slightly angled, fine pointed tips, good grip
  • Common Types: Straight tweezers, L-shaped tweezers, boot tweezers
  • What to Look For: Comfortable grip, precise tips that close perfectly, not too stiff or too loose

Application Tweezers (Dominant Hand):

  • Purpose: To pick up and place lash extensions

For Classic Lashes:

  • Straight or slightly curved tweezers
  • Fine, precise tips for picking up single extensions
  • Good grip without being too tight

For Volume Lashes:

  • Volume tweezers (also called Russian volume tweezers)
  • L-shaped or boot-shaped design
  • Specialized tips for creating and holding fans
  • Various tip styles (pointed, curved, etc.)

Care Tips:

  • Clean after every use
  • Store properly to protect tips
  • Replace when tips become damaged or misaligned
  • Never drop tweezers (can damage alignment)

2. LASH EXTENSIONS

The extensions themselves come in various specifications:

PBT (Polybutylene Terephthalate) Fibres:

  • PBT (Polybutylene Terephthalate) Fibres is the synthetic material that ALL lash extensions are made from
  • It’s a type of polyester polymer
  • PBT is heat-resistant, holds curl well, and is lightweight
  • This is the base material for all the different “types” of lashes

Material Names (Synthetic Silk, Synthetic Mink, Faux Mink, Cashmere, etc.):

  • These are all marketing names for PBT fibres with different finishes/treatments
  • The different “materials” are really just:
  • Synthetic Silk – Semi-glossy finish, slightly firmer
  • Synthetic Mink – Softer, more flexible, slight sheen
  • Faux Mink – Very soft, natural appearance, matte-ish
  • Cashmere – Softest, most lightweight, premium matte finish
  • Flat/Ellipse lashes – PBT shaped differently (oval cross-section instead of round)

Specifications to Know:

Curls:

  • J, B, C, D, L, L+, M, U curls
  • Each creates different lift and effect

Lengths:

  • Range from 5mm to 18mm+
  • Most commonly used: 8mm-14mm

Diameters (Thickness):

  • Classic: 0.10mm, 0.12mm, 0.15mm, 0.18mm, 0.20mm
  • Volume: 0.03mm, 0.05mm, 0.07mm

What to Stock:

  • Multiple curls (at minimum: C, D, and J)
  • Range of lengths (8mm-16mm)

3. ADHESIVE (GLUE)

Lash adhesive is what bonds the extension to the natural lash.

Types:

Standard/Regular Adhesive:

  • Drying time: 2-4 seconds
  • Best for beginners
  • More forgiving application time

Fast-Drying Adhesive:

  • Drying time: 0.5-1 second
  • For experienced artists
  • Requires quick, precise application

Sensitive Adhesive:

  • Lower fume formulation
  • For clients with sensitivities
  • Slightly longer drying time

Key Properties:

  • Retention: How long extensions last
  • Drying time: How quickly it bonds
  • Fume level: Amount of fumes released
  • Consistency: Thickness of the glue

Storage and Handling:

  • Store upright in cool, dark place
  • Shake well before each use (usually 30 seconds minimum)
  • Replace every 4-6 weeks once opened
  • Keep away from moisture and sunlight
  • Use fresh drop every 15-20 minutes during application

Ideal Working Conditions:

  • Temperature: 20-22°C (68-72°F)
  • Humidity: 40-60%

4. UNDER EYE PADS/GEL PATCHES
